The Cottage

Clanaborough: A cottage with a difference

Clanaborough has been owned by our family for just over 100 years and it is a much loved place. It was bought by our great grandfather and is still frequently used by the family. We also love to see others enjoying it too. We do not charge full commercial rates but let it out in order to help cover the costs of maintaining the property, e.g. re-thatching.

It is a pretty thatched cottage situated in a lovely rural setting with views across the surrounding countryside from the garden – VisitBritain 3 star inspection report

400 year history

Clanaborough still retains many original features including low doorways and ceilings, cob walls and the odd creaking floorboard. These are amongst its main attractions and one of the reasons why we are well booked, particularly during the summer months. The cob walls are about 3 feet (90cm) thick so the cottage maintains a fairly steady temperature inside.

The log burning stove is located in the middle of the cottage and this creates warmth throughout the building. And in the sitting room, there is an open fire place - what can be better than sitting round a lovely log fire on a cold, dark winter’s night? However if you are not into lighting fires, don't worry, you can rely upon the modern heating system to keep you warm and cosy.

Old properties

Old properties are full of character and charm and Clanaborough is no exception, definitely. It was built long before the days of damp-proofing and cavity wall insulation. This may mean a few adjustments to keep things just right, such as leaving one or two bedroom windows open to let air circulate. (It just helps to prevent condensation caused by the climate this far west.) It is inevitable that the odd damp patch might appear as it is in the nature of the materials used when the cottage was built. Staying in an old property is a different experience from living in a modern, air-conditioned house - it's better! That's why we have so many repeat bookings.
